IPCC REPORT ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE ROLE FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The most recent IPCC report on Climate Change released April 2014 sends a clear message: We must move away from 'business as usual' if we are to avoid the most dangerous impacts of Climate Change.

After a brief reduction in greenhouse gases due primarily to the 08-09 Recession, emissions of heat trapping gases are once again rising and setting new records. Worldwide, building make up 19% of total emissions (often 60-80% in cities) which is where energy efficiency can really shine.

Programs like DCEO's Illinois Energy Now can play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through helping buildings identify and implement energy and money saving measures. Full story here.

SPOTLIGHT: AVISTON ELEMENTARY

Aviston Elementary, roughly 30 miles east of St. Louis is taking big strides to reduce their energy usage. Having received a  SEDAC Energy Assessment in March 2012, they have already implemented air sealing repairs, unitary controls on HVAC equipment and low-flow pre-rinse spray valves. Occupancy sensors and kitchen ventilation hood controls are up next.

According to Tami Kampwerth, District Superintendent and Principal, "Aviston has certainly seen a reduction in our energy costs. Even with the extreme temperatures this past winter, we still used less energy. We were able to use the energy assessment to justify energy efficiency projects to our Board." Full Story Here
